Cirencester Four Seasons Mosaic Commission

23/11/2023
I was kindly commissioned to create a Four Seasons mosaic using the Roman Cirencester Four Seasons mosaic (in the Corninium Museum) as a source for my inspiration.

Here with have the Roman Goddess Ceres wearing a chaplet of leaves and corn with a bunch on her left shoulder and a reaping sickle on her right.

The winter (representing death) is missing in the Cirencester mosaics having been destroyed. But would probably have been cloaked and hooded, holding a bare branch. The people of Corinium relied on agriculture to survive and honoured the seasons in order to promote a good harvest.

Each mosaic measures 40 cm square and will feature in a private home.
